The Dr. Alan M. Gewirtz Memorial Scholarships support outstanding new scientists and recognizes their contributions in the field of oligonucleotide therapeutics.

Dr. Gewirtz was very influential in the field of oligonucleotides as well as in the establishment of the society. His passing in November 2010 inspired the society to create the scholarship in his honor. OTS created the Dr. Alan M. Gewirtz Memorial Scholarship in 2011 as a tribute to his life and work.

To meet to growth of the society and the field of oligonucleotide therapeutics, OTS instated a second scholarship in 2020 to support new scientists from the graduate to junior professional level; two awards are given annually.

Eligibility:

  • Be a current member of OTS
  • Be a current postdoctoral fellow or junior industrial professional
  • Eligibility is limited to the first 5 years of active research after receiving the PhD or MD degree
  • Be active in research at the time the award is given
  • Attend the current year’s Annual Meeting and present a 15-minute short talk on their research
  • Prior winners are not eligible

Required application materials:

  • Current CV: must include the date on which the advanced degree was awarded; should include all evidence of contributions to the field (publications, patents, presentations, awards, and/or other relevant information)
  • Summary of accomplishments which detail the applicant’s most significant contributions (research, mentorship, outreach, and/or other relevant information) to the field to date
  • A letter of recommendation, preferably from the applicant’s previous or current mentor(s) or supervisor(s)

Recipient receives:

  • $2,000 USD award
  • Complimentary registration to the OTS Annual Meeting
  • Formal presentation of the award at the OTS Annual Meeting
  • Short talk speaking slot at the OTS Annual Meeting

  • Be a current graduate student or have defended within the same calendar year as the current Annual Meeting.
  • Eligibility is limited to current graduate students and those who have defended in the same calendar year as the current Annual Meeting.
  • Be active in research at the time the award is given
  • Attend the current year’s Annual Meeting and present a 15-minute short talk on their research
  • Prior winners are not eligible

  • A letter of recommendation, preferably from the applicant’s graduate mentor(s) or supervisor(s)

  • $2,000 USD award

  • Short talk speaking slot at the OTS Annual Meeting
