“Strengthening Research, Advocacy, and Collaboration in ALS: The Dual Perspective of a Scientist and Community Member”

Biography

Daniel Knight is a fourth-year PhD candidate in chemistry at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, where he is developing a novel DNA aptamer to block pathological aggregation of TDP-43 in ALS/MND. His preliminary work led to a 2024 ALS Canada-Brain Canada Discovery Grant, the first awarded to Carleton University. The loss of Daniel’s father to SOD1-ALS in 2019 has not only inspired his academic research, but also multiple volunteer opportunities. He currently serves as a member of the Genetics Taskforce with the International Alliance on ALS/MND Association, where together with global experts he contributes to the development of global recommendations surrounding genetic ALS/MND. He has also contributed to annual fundraising and outreach efforts with ALS Canada, raising over $40,000 for ALS/MND with his family and friends over the past 6 years.
