Job Description

About the N1C

The N=1 Collaborative is a nonprofit whose mission is to transform the treatment of rare genetic disease by building a scalable and responsible pathway for individualized medicines. We are a team of clinicians, scientists, regulators, patient advocates from across academia, government, foundations, and biotech/pharma committed to openly sharing and iterating our work with the broader community in order to make individualized medicines routine worldwide.

Rare diseases are individually rare, but collectively common — hundreds of millions are impacted globally across ~10,000 diseases. Many affect children, most have no treatments, and the commercial drug development opportunities are limited. The dawn of new genetic medicines has made possible the development of drugs tailored to a single patient. Scaling this pathway safely and sustainably requires building a new paradigm and best practices in a collaborative, open, and thoughtful manner. Come join us in our mission.

About the role

Use your organizational, communication, and strategy skills to help build the future of bespoke treatments for rare genetic disease.

We are seeking volunteers interested in representing the trainee community and voice as part of the N1C, especially those interested in science communication, social media and website management, and generation and curation of internal and public resources.

We are looking for a trainee who:

  • Is passionate about transforming rare disease treatment
  • Is supremely organized, self-motivated
  • Is an excellent communicator
  • Has experience working in academic or nonprofit settings (not essential)
  • Is willing to problem solve and learn new areas quickly with a bias to action

Your day to day may include:

  • Content creation for the N1C social media and website
  • Curation and generation for internal and public resources
  • Working closely with N1C leadership in strategic goal setting and prioritization relevant to your role
  • Communicating progress to other teams and N1C leadership via slides, reports, and presentations
  • Researching diverse concepts of individualized medicines, from patient selection to ethics to clinical outcomes.
  • Harnessing the expertise of diverse resources experts to trainees (e.g., MD and PhD students, clinical residents & fellows) and beyond

We think an ideal individual in this role has

  • A passion for making an impact on rare disease research and bettering the lives of those affected by rare disease
  • Comfort working remotely and self-managing
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in progress OR are currently a junior trainee in industry
  • Background in science, medicine, or related fields
  • Knowledgeable about the specific challenges faced by current trainees and willing to bring an advocacy voice to the N1C

Reasons you may like this role

  • You will play a central role in a global effort to transform the way we treat disease
  • You will be inspired consistently by the ultra-rare disease patients and their families, as well as the teams that care for them
  • You will work with top experts and learn about the scientific, clinical, regulatory, and drug development pathways of individualized medicines
  • You will be a part of a small, passionate, and committed team who are driven by the same mission and vision for the future

Reasons you may not like this role

  • We are a startup: we may not have the resources or structure of larger organizations, and work is fast-paced and dynamic
  • We are a nonprofit: many experts are volunteers, and harnessing their timely contributions requires equal parts EQ as well as IQ
  • You will likely have to wear multiple hats as we build the organization
  • There is a lot of autonomy with managing yourself and problem solving
  • There is no playbook for the work we are doing; we are building it

Thank you for your interest! To apply please send us a letter of intent, a recent CV, and a letter of support from your current supervisor to info@n1collaborative.org
